RACE THE ULTIMATE HIMALAYAN
mountain bike endurathon
Field a Team to attempt what the NY Times described as the "world's toughest single-day bike race"
Find out how far you and your team can last on the 166-mile, high-altitude course that climbs and descends across three 10,000ft+ Himalayan peaks.
This August 2018 All Bhutan Travel and a host or organizers will be taking teams of international cyclists to attempt the race for the promotion of international peace and goodwill through sports.

Welcome To The World's Ultimate Cycling Challenge
IS THIS REALLY THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST BIKE RACE?
You’ve got to ride it to decide it….
Here's why I say the distance is the easy part:
- Total Vertical Climb: 18,000+ feet
- Average Riding Elevation: 7,000+ feet
- Mountain Summits: 3 over 10,000 feet
- Start Time: 2 a.m. (bring a headlamp!)
- Road Conditions: Under construction
- Weather Conditions: Rain or shine. Expect both.
WHO WILL BE NEXT CYCLIST TO FINISH THE WORLD’S TOUGHEST BIKE RACE IN A SINGLE DAY?
It was HRH Prince Jigyel Wangchuck, President of Bhutan's Olympic Committee, who first conceived of the Tour of the Dragon (TOD) in 2009 which originated as “a friendly group ride” with 23 of his cycling comrades.
Participants in this first attempt (to complete the 166-mile course in a single day) include the current Prime Minister of Bhutan Mr. Tshering Tobgay, who is reported to have finished the ride after a crash that left him with a broken jaw.
Hailed by the New York Times as the “world’s toughest single-day bike race” the Tour of the Dragon is unlike any course on earth - with 166 miles of all-terrain, under-construction roads - more than 18,000 vertical feet of ascent, and then descent- with an average riding elevation over 7,000 feet, its easy to understand why locals call it ‘The Death Race.’
Throw in the risks of falling boulders, wild roaming animals, and riding through complete darkness – and it’s easy to see why so few choose to do it.
With a starting time of 2am, riders must complete in darkness for nearly 3 hours, using their own headlamps for illumination. Before crossing the finish line they will need to summit three mountain passes, over 10,000 feet each, which includes the final climb, know by locals as the “Neck of The Dragon” – a relentless 24- mile hill that climbs 6,000 vertical feet non-stop.
In short: The Tour of The Dragon is the most difficult one-day bike ride in the world – with less than 200 (TBC) cyclists having ever been able to conquer it.
In 2015, adventure travel filmmaker Ian OSullivan was granted special access to interview HRH Prince Jigyel Wangchuck, to learn the original and untold story of how he first started this competition.
Partnering with eco-documentary filmmaker Tim Gorski (Rattle The Cage Productions), OSullivan not only interviewed the prince, but he also finished the entire course on a borrowed bike while filming his journey using an iPhone 6.
